Why are My Brake Calipers Making a Rattling Sound?

There's no end of things to do around Conway. A stroll down the River Walk along the Waccamaw, a visit proverbially back in time to the L.W. Paul Living History Farm, a round of golf at Shaftesbury Glen -- it'll all have you heading off the beaten path, and your Subaru can take you there. So, you shouldn't have to worry about your brakes on the way. But you're hearing a rattle anyway -- coming from the front end when stepping on the pedal.

There're a few explanations for that. One's the brake rotor contacting the brake caliper, which usually means worn-out brake pads -- a quick replacement, no problem. Another, and a little more trouble, is something stuck in the caliper. Usually, though, you get a grind or screech here, not a rattle; either way, if that's the issue, you can try to pull it out, see if that helps. Otherwise, you might need a brake service.

Of course, it might just be that the clearance between the front caliper bracket and its pins is too high. There're service advisories with fixes for things like that. Take Subaru Legacy and Subaru Outback models from between 2010 and 2014, for example -- those with 16-inch front brakes. Plug a code reader into one and see it throw failure code QAR-25, and the trouble's almost certainly clearance -- too much between the caliper support mounting bolts and the holes. Other causes of rattling are simpler: worn or damaged guide (slide) pins, or even a dust/heat shield.

How Do I Stop My Brake Calipers from Rattling?

Assuming the calipers don't need to be replaced, there's a couple simple fixes. One's an anti-rattle clip for disc brakes -- part number 26232FE002, for instance, which fits most Subaru models from the early 2000s on, or part number 26232FE010, one made for most Subaru sports cars from then on. They're easy to put in.

The thing is, if you're seeing the signs of an actual bad brake caliper -- buildup or corrosion around the seals, brake fluid leaks (in the engine; onto the wheels), brake pressure problems, sideways drift when you brake, squealing or continuous grinding sounds -- there's a good chance the calipers actually need replacement. Brake and/or ABS lights on the dash are good indicators.
