Two Big Ways to Customize Subaru BRAT for Hauling in South Carolina
Your BRAT is one of the coolest Subaru vehicles of the late 1970s, 1980s, and early 1990s. Whether it's a GL trim or a GL Turbo from '84, '87, or another popular model year, it's got a lot of potential as far as upgrades go. Good thing you came to us for advice on where to start.
Here's a couple ways to take that light-duty coupe utility you love to the next level.
1. Soup Up Performance
We'll bet you've always wanted more out of your 1.8-liter, four-cylinder engine. You can bump up its horsepower and torque easily, you know -- and get better efficiency to boot. Just put in a turbocharger or supercharger and swap out your stock air intake and engine air filter for a cold air intake and performance air filter. Then, customize the exhaust.
The engine will be able to pull in more and better air, enriching its oxygen-to-fuel ratio, and the exhaust pipe will open up. A perhaps unexpected benefit: you'll get an unmistakable head-turning rev out of it -- one nobody will mistake for anything other than a growling Subaru BOXER.
2. Mod for Handling
Want a little more ground clearance for hauling? Upgrade the suspension: lift it, put in performance shocks and struts, and put on bigger and grippier off-road tires. It'll all give you a little more precise control when the ride gets rough. (For protection off-road, consider installing skid plates and tougher front and rear bumpers.)
Not sure what to do? Let the pros help.
