What are Common Problems with Subaru Impreza?
Impreza is the quintessential Subaru sedan and hatchback duo. It's capable, sporting a SUBARU BOXER engine and Symmetrical all-wheel drive (AWD) -- great in bad South Carolina weather. It's loaded with the latest technologies -- beyond STARLINK infotainment, safety features galore. It's even got great fuel economy. Put simply, it checks all the boxes for a great family car, a commuter with serious road-trip prospects -- up to Wilmington, down to Charleston, or just out to Myrtle Beach.
It should last you a good 20 years, too -- 200,000 miles or so, provided it's serviced regularly. Here are some issues you might run into from time to time, and what to do about them.
Bad Oxygen Sensors
Driving an Impreza from 2000, 2002, between 2006 and 2009, or 2012? One with anywhere from 100,000 to 200,000 miles on it? Check Engine light comes on, most often, it's because the O2 sensor's failed -- more specifically, the front one, and because it's cracked. Subaru service bulletin WXW-80 should have more info on whether your ride qualifies for replacement, but you might have to take care of it yourself. Check with a Subaru dealer or an authorized service center.
Faulty Spark Plug Wiring
Impreza models from between 2000 and 2011, with 80,000-plus miles clocked -- they're prone to misfires (with the Check Engine light showing up on the dash, too). The culprit: wiring for the spark plugs. (Slim chance it could be the ignition coil, too -- you'll know that's more likely if you see carbon tracks, or if the contacts are shorted.) You'll need to replace it.
Knock Sensor Failure
Another reason the Check Engine might illuminate -- especially on Impreza models with 100,000 miles or so, from '96 and '97, between 2000 and 2010, and 2014 -- is the knock sensor going bad. You can test it all right, but it can sometimes fail afterward anyway. Best thing to do is replace it.
