Customize Your Subaru Ascent: Two Key Mods

Your Ascent is the ideal family SUV, quintessentially Subaru. It's one with tons of pros -- for instance, mid-size as crossovers go, but huge on interior space -- and very few cons (although, say, a comfortable ride, it's one that could, for example, use a little more power). Put simply, there's features aplenty that you can get more out of, and even a few you can improve.

1. Upgrade to a Supercharger

Later Ascent models, for instance, incorporate turbocharged 2.4-liter, four-cylinder SUBARU BOXER engines. They're capable of 260 horsepower, but could benefit from a few extra horses (for taking advantage of that 5,000 pounds of max tow capacity, for instance). One way to get them: add a supercharger.

It can pull in a lot more air, sure, but that's only the beginning. Swap out your factory intake for a cold air intake -- relocate the intake to near a fender or above a wheel well -- and it can get denser, cooler, freer-flowing, high-quality air. Replace your engine filter with a performance air filter, and you can optimize airflow while removing pollutants from the air entering the engine. The result, altogether: a richer air-to-fuel ratio, and so, a little extra horsepower and torque from combustion.

2. Add Cargo Accessories

That trailering capacity can only go so far. You can make the most of the 75.6 cubic feet of max storage space available in your Ascent, too. There's a couple simple ways to do it. One is to add cargo trays, liners, and nets to help contain and organize your luggage. The other, when the trunk's full, is to add a roof rack, bicycle rack, or kayak rack to expand capacity even further.
